Mary asks…

What flowering plants will grow in shade and acid soil?

I have a garden (New York city suburb) with acid soil (ph 5.5-6) and mostly in the shade of huge 100-year old trees. The previous owner planted ferns all over the place, which I really don't like. Does anybody have experience of any colorful plants -- i.e. flowers or flowering bushes -- that would thrive under these conditions? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

landscapeliving answers:

Dwarf Magnolia Stellata, Leucothoe, Lithodora, Gentian, Enkianthus and Crinodendron will all thrive under these conditions.

Suggestions for partial shade plants please.?

I have created a border underneath a pear tree and I would like any suggestions for plants please. Preferably the cottage garden type with flowers which I could cut. Thanks.

landscapeliving answers:

If you have partial shade, does that mean you also have partial sun? If so, then you have a vast choice of plants at your disposal - just avoid the ones that specify 'full sun'.

Provided they have some sun for part of the day, most plants will grow well, but as your pear tree will take a lot of moisture from the soil around it, just make sure that the plants are watered regularly as they will soon droop, especially in the summer.

Shade Plants?

My front garden, thanks to a large maple tree, is part shade and some of it is full shade. Does anyone have any ideas for some plants/flowers to grow there? Its a pretty large garden and the focal point of my front yard.

landscapeliving answers:

I have a garden that is also shaded. I have bleeding hearts, bug bane, astilbe, jack frost ornamental grass, forget me nots, and Jacobs ladder. Most of mine are flowering. I have included a couple sites that you may find helpful. Good luck.

Thomas asks…

What plants/flowers will grow in a very shaded area?

I have three trees at the bottom of my garden and I want to plant some flowers for abit of colour.

landscapeliving answers:

I love hostas--the flowers aren't that showy (small lavender bloom on a stalk about 1' above the leaves), but the leaves are gorgeous, and you can get all types, from about 6" to 3', leaf colors blue green to light green, stripes of all types, including green/yellow and dark green/white, all textures, you name it. Plus they're a cinch to grow--I have a black thumb, and I have dozens in the front yard that are doing great (they just come up year after year, and I don't do a thing).

For nice blooms, try impatiens--you can get them in red, pink or white, and though they need some watering, they're pretty as a large group. You might also try pansies.

Shade Flowers for Easton, PA?

I am a new homeowner and now a new gardener. My garden faces south but a neighbor has a HUGE tree which shades my yard...so i need some flowers/plants that will blossom in the shade. thanks!

I live in Easton,Pennsylvania...about an hour away from Philadelphia.

landscapeliving answers:

Impatients not only bloom in the shade, but they also flourish in the shade becoming a rounded full container of colorful blooms. Other great shade accents are ferns and also Hosta's, but stay away from Hosta's if you have deers.
Here's a great site for some more wonderful shade plantings:
